We recently had the absolute pleasure of hosting Christel Dahlberg and her partner David Keijser. Together, we created a bespoke journey through South Africa to ring in the big 5-0 birthday! Here's a lovely review we received from the couple post-trip - and it was so heart warming we had to turn it into a blog! Enjoy...
February 2025 Newsletter

They say that love makes the world go round – and if that’s true, then South Africa is at the very heart of it. With every golden sunrise, every wave kissing the shoreline, and every warm embrace from those who call this land 'home', there's reason we want you to return sooner rather than later.
Now is the time to start planning your trip to South Africa for this coming September through to May 2026 when our weather is best (in the world) and so too are all the experiences on offer...
FOR THE SWEDISH KRONOR WE'RE A 'CHEAP DATE'
Let’s talk value—your Swedish Kronor goes a long way here, meaning you can indulge in luxury experiences at a fraction of the cost.
Here’s how Cape Town measures up to Stockholm:
Cappuccino: R35 (SEK 20) vs. SEK 45
Petrol per litre: R24 (SEK 14) vs. SEK 21
Fine dining meal (per person): R600 (SEK 352) vs. SEK 1500
Average lunch: R150 (SEK 88) vs. SEK 250
Beer or glass of wine: R50 (SEK 29) vs. SEK 100
WHERE THE SUN IS ALWAYS SMITTEN
And let’s not forget the sunshine! The sun adores SA and graces us with its golden touch for over 300 days a year. So no matter the season, a safari here is always an adventure.
In the dry winter months (May - September), the bush thins out, making it easier to spot wildlife congregating around the dwindling waterholes. Crisp mornings give way to pleasantly warm afternoons, but come summer (October to April), the landscape transforms into a lush green paradise. Afternoon thunderstorms refresh the air, newborn animals take their first steps, and migratory birds bring bursts of colour to the skies.
WHY WE CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF SA
How could we not be smitten? This land is an irresistible love affair. And we're not alone in this - Time Out Magazine announced last month that Cape Town won the "World's Best City" for 2025, after finishing second in 2024.
FOOD AS A LOVE LANGUAGE
Because our entire team lives in SA we have intimate knowledge of the foodie scene. We know when top chefs move, when once-beloved spots lose their magic, and which new openings are worth the hype.
Whether you’re craving a world-class tasting menu, a sizzling 'braai', or fresh seafood, we point you in the right direction—because in South Africa, food is not just a meal, it’s an experience. Find out more about how we assist you during your travels.
FINDING THE LOVE(LIEST) SPOTS
Perhaps you travelled with us recently and want to return for some more self-exploration or self-catering stays? Let us help you book the best properties in Cape Town and the Winelands thanks to our partnership with two leading property management companies in town who only work with travel designers and no private individuals.
Sadly, over the last few years we've seen a decline in the standards of AirBnbs as well as increase in fraud. And because we know the lie of the land, we can find your properties close to leading attractions that are safe and perfect for short stays.
PLACES TO DISCOVER ON YOUR RETURN
Greyton | Overberg 2 hours from Cape Town
Greyton is a charming village that feels like a step back in time. Voted as one of SA’s most beautiful small towns, Greyton is known for its stunning mountain views, quaint streets lined with oak trees, and a thriving arts and food scene. You can explore scenic hiking and cycling trails, browse vibrant weekend markets, and taste wine from the cooler climate surrounding region.
Ballito | North Coast KwaZulu-Natal
Craving a tropical paradise blend of beach relaxation and world-class golfing? Ballito is the place to be. With the highly anticipated opening of a new hotel resort in 2026, the North Coast above Durban is on its way to becoming the Riviera of Africa right on the Indian Ocean.
Nature's Valley | Tsitsikamma National Park
For those of you who love the outdoors, Nature’s Valley in Tsitsikamma National Park is an absolute must-visit. This secluded coastal paradise is the finish to the legendary Otter Trail, one of South Africa’s most famous multi-day hikes. With pristine beaches, lush indigenous forests, and breathtaking cliffs, it’s a haven for nature lovers seeking tranquility and adventure. It is also just 20 minutes from Plettenberg Bay and 2 hours from Addo Elephant Park outside of Port Elizabeth.
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley | Hermanus 1.5 hours from Cape Town
We think the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley takes the crown for intimate tastings. Tucked between rolling mountains and the cool ocean breeze of Walker Bay near Hermanus, this valley produces some of the finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the country. The boutique wineries here focus on quality over quantity, offering intimate tasting experiences with spectacular views away from the tourist buzz.
A NOTE FROM JONAS
As I sit here reflecting on the past few months, I find myself struggling to find the right words. Just before Christmas, I lost my husband of 20 years. The grief is unimaginable, and there are days when the weight of it feels too heavy to bear. But as I take a breath and think about what we built together—Gonana South African Travel—I am reminded that this was always a passion project for both of us.
We dreamed of creating something that not only shared the beauty of South Africa but also made a difference in people's lives. Hosting guests, guiding them through the magic of South Africa, and sharing the warmth of this country has been surprisingly healing.
Each person who travelled with us over December and January brought a little bit of light into my life. Their stories, their laughter, and their curiosity reminded me of the joy that still exists in the world. It’s not always easy, but I know that what we’ve built at Gonana is a tribute to our shared vision.
I carry him with me in everything I do, and I am grateful for the support, kindness, and understanding that so many of you have shown. With deep gratitude and hope for the future...
